Crowding the plate

A Baseball forum for coaches, parents and players

I coach my sons 12U Major Travel team and we are in fall ball mode right now. We are seeing more and more pitchers that just pound the outside part of the plate and with the level of umpires we see at times they get 6" or more off the black of the plate. What is the best approach for hitting this type of pitching? My first thought was crowd the plate making this pitch more hittable but I was a pitcher in HS and College so I am not sure that works.

Hey Coach - crowding the plate won't cure the issue. Have your young kids lay the bat down across home plate on the dirt - at the spot called the "Middle Corner" - that is where the plate angles to the back corner. Lay the bat down so that the end of the bat is even with the far away middle corner and then where the knob is on the batters side of home plate - have your batters front toe/shoe touch up against the knob.

Adjust forward or back from there based on the velocity of the opposing pitcher.

Hope this helps.
